Norway’s King Harald, known for his reformist approach and distinguished reign of over three decades, has passed away at the age of 89, the royal palace announced. The monarch, who had been battling a bacterial infection in his blood, died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28.
Harald, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, was admitted to the hospital on August 17 for treatment. In 2024, he faced health issues while vacationing in Malaysia, where he underwent a temporary pacemaker implant before returning to Norway for a permanent device fitting.
Despite reducing his official engagements in 2024, King Harald, who had been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991, remained committed to his lifelong oath as king, rejecting any notion of abdication.
Prime Minister Mark Carney paid tribute to King Harald, emphasizing his deep ties to Canada. Harald’s strong bond with Canada was highlighted by visits to Toronto and Little Norway during his wartime exile, as well as a state visit in 2002 that included stops in Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia.
Amid the royal family’s turbulent times, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of Harald’s son Crown Prince Haakon, faced public scrutiny for her association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, her son Marius Hoiby, from a previous relationship, was recently convicted of rape and domestic violence, receiving a four-year prison sentence.
King Harald, a descendant of Queen Victoria, ascended the throne in 1991, gradually modernizing the ceremonial role and becoming a symbol of national unity in the 21st century. Renowned for his compassion and leadership, he provided solace to the nation during tragedies such as the 2011 Oslo and Utoeya island attacks, often personally visiting disaster-stricken areas to offer support.
In his later years, King Harald advocated for tolerance and diversity, emphasizing the importance of openness within royal families. His legacy of embracing inclusivity and unity resonated with the Norwegian people, earning him high regard as a monarch who represented the values of the nation.
