Netflix’s latest sensation, ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story,’ sheds light on the notorious American killer, Ed Gein, also known as The Butcher of Plainfield. While Gein has inspired various fictional monsters in the past, this show marks the first time his real-life story has been depicted in a true crime series.

The series features actor Charlie Hunnam portraying Gein and delves into significant moments from the killer’s life, including his relationship with neighbor Adeline Watkins, portrayed by Suzanna Son. Despite a tumultuous engagement depicted in the series, Adeline ultimately moves away, leaving Gein behind.

Notably, the show portrays Adeline as being aware of Gein’s crimes and even suggests that she influenced his macabre interests by providing him with disturbing materials. Following Gein’s capture, Adeline publicly speaks about his murderous tendencies, leading to questions about the authenticity of their relationship.

In a surprising turn, Adeline now denies ever being romantically involved with Gein, claiming they only met after his disturbing behavior had already begun. Showrunner Ian Brennan defends her inclusion in the series, citing Adeline’s conflicting statements about their supposed relationship over the years.

Despite claims from Adeline and her mother about a decades-long relationship with Gein, the truth remains murky. Adeline describes their interactions as casual outings involving movies and visits to local taverns, with Gein’s preference for milkshakes over alcohol being noted.

Adeline recalls discussions about crime with Gein but denies any awareness of his own criminal activities. She discloses that Gein proposed to her in 1955, but she declined, citing her own insecurities. Subsequent interviews see Adeline retracting her earlier statements, now insisting they were merely friends.

Gein himself never publicly acknowledged any romantic involvement with Adeline, leaving the true nature of their relationship a mystery that may never be fully unraveled.
