Nepal’s military rescuers successfully reached an area impacted by a sudden flood on Monday. Helicopters and army personnel delivered essential supplies to the Budhi Gandaki river region in north central Nepal and initiated the evacuation of residents and tourists. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, with five individuals currently missing. The government’s prompt warning enabled most individuals to seek safety at higher grounds prior to the flood’s arrival.

The flash flood on Sunday was triggered by a landslide that initially blocked the river close to Chumchure village. This natural disaster resulted in the destruction of five bridges, the disruption of three hydropower plant construction sites, and significant damage to numerous homes and farms.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority disclosed that 95 individuals, including nine foreigners, have been relocated to nearby towns. The flood-affected region encompasses popular trekking trails for hikers, particularly during the bustling month of October. Relief efforts include trucks transporting provisions like food, tents, and medicine to accessible areas by road, while army helicopters are delivering aid to isolated mountain communities.

The Budhi Gandaki River, a significant waterway near Kathmandu, merges with the Trishuli River. Social media videos depict houses and structures being carried away by the surging river amid towering mountains, though the exact impact on nearby villages remains uncertain. Nepal continues to recuperate from a catastrophic flood along the Nepal-China border in August, which resulted in over 1,400 fatalities and numerous individuals reported missing. Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s office announced the conclusion of search and rescue operations on October 5, shifting focus towards infrastructure rehabilitation efforts.
