Russia’s intrusion into the airspace of NATO countries has been labeled as a potentially significant escalation by David Lammy, who cautioned Vladimir Putin that the alliance is prepared to safeguard its territories.

The Deputy Prime Minister asserted that NATO members are capable of confronting the Russian aggressor, emphasizing that Putin will face a formidable challenge. In response to a recent incident involving a Russian drone breaching Polish airspace, RAF Typhoons, accompanied by an RAF Voyager aircraft, conducted their inaugural NATO air defense operation over Poland.

When questioned about the adequacy of the response, considering Russian jets violating Estonia’s airspace for 12 minutes, Mr. Lammy assured that NATO is actively engaged. He highlighted the deployment of Typhoon and Voyager aircraft in support of NATO missions on the eastern flank and ongoing coordination with Poland and Estonia, labeling the breach as a serious escalation.

Furthermore, he emphasized the collective strength of the 27-nation alliance in deterring Putin, underscoring the substantial effort that would be mounted against any potential aggression. UK fighter jets embarked on their first NATO policing mission over Poland following recent airspace violations by Russian drones, aiming to patrol the area where drones were intercepted earlier.

The mission was viewed as a defensive measure, with the fighter jets, designated as “chaos 1-1” and “chaos 1-2”, monitoring the skies near Belarusian and Russian airspace without any notable incidents reported. The UK’s initial NATO “Eastern Sentry” operation was conducted without significant events.

The UK jets’ mission came after Russian drone incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace, prompting concerns of escalating tensions. The situation led Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to caution about the potential for “open conflict,” marking a heightened level of tension not seen since World War II. Estonia also reported unauthorized entry of Russian jets into its airspace, further highlighting regional concerns.

In response, Defense Secretary John Healey praised the RAF personnel for their solidarity with Poland in upholding shared security interests. He commended the pilots and crew for successfully defending allies against Russian provocations, reinforcing the commitment to safeguard NATO airspace.

Over 400 UK personnel are set to support NATO patrolling efforts in Eastern Europe. Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth reaffirmed the strong partnership with NATO, emphasizing readiness to project airpower effectively. The collaborative efforts underline the commitment to bolstering regional security and deterring potential threats.
