A mother from North Yorkshire, Nicola Richardson, has successfully saved £1,370 by adopting a frugal habit of only using cash for her transactions. Richardson, a teacher and mother of two boys, has stuck to this practice for the past ten years, deviating only during the Covid pandemic when contactless payments became more common.
Operating on a weekly budget, Richardson withdraws £130 to cover expenses ranging from groceries to fuel and household necessities, including items for her children and cat. She emphasized that avoiding card usage helps her resist impulsive purchases.
According to Richardson, utilizing physical cash provides a tangible connection to money, unlike the ease of tapping a card which can lead to overspending. She highlighted that having a limited amount in her purse curbs unnecessary spending and prevents her from succumbing to unplanned purchases.
In addition to her cash-only approach, Richardson undertakes various money-saving challenges such as “no buy” days, tenner Tuesday, and fiver Friday. By participating in the penny challenge last year, where she saved increasing amounts daily, she managed to accumulate £667.95 in loose change, resulting in a total savings of £1,370 for household expenses.
Richardson’s dedication to saving money has extended to her YouTube channel, where she shares her frugal living tips. By practicing mindful spending, setting financial goals, and engaging in saving challenges, Richardson maximizes her leftover funds for small indulgences while steering clear of unnecessary trends and social media-driven spending.
