A young child named Finn Watkinson, hailed as a miraculous toddler, is beaming with joy after he was revived 90 minutes following a cardiac arrest. His parents, witnessing the ordeal, saw a surgeon perform life-saving measures by massaging Finn’s heart internally during a delicate operation.
Finn, aged two, possesses a rare genetic condition known as Williams Syndrome, often dubbed as ‘happy syndrome’ due to the cheerful and friendly nature of individuals with this condition. Unfortunately, those with Williams Syndrome, affecting one in 18,000 people, commonly experience heart complications.
Born prematurely in December 2022, Finn, initially diagnosed with a heart murmur, underwent corrective surgery in July at Leeds General Infirmary to address arterial narrowing in his heart. Despite the successful surgery, Finn unexpectedly went into cardiac arrest during the night.
His mother, Amy Whittingham, recounted the harrowing experience of watching medical professionals work tirelessly to revive Finn after his heart stopped beating. The surgeon, Dr. Ali Al-Sarraf, played a crucial role in resuscitating Finn by conducting internal heart massage for an extended period until a heartbeat was restored.
Following the critical situation, Finn’s family was informed that his condition was precarious, and they were advised to prepare for the worst. However, through unwavering determination and faith, Finn gradually improved, eventually coming off life support within five days and being transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Despite suffering from hypoxic ischemic brain injury due to oxygen deprivation during the cardiac arrest, Finn’s resilience shone through. Although facing some speech regression, he was discharged in mid-August with hopes of a full recovery. Remarkably, Finn was even well enough to serve as a mascot for his beloved football team, Barnsley FC, in September.
Embracing his love for music, particularly the Jonas Brothers, Finn begins each day with a dance session to their tunes, reflecting his joyful and resilient spirit. His mother, Amy, expressed gratitude for Finn’s survival, underscoring his inspiring journey as a testament to strength and positivity in the face of adversity.
