Next week’s budget will see Rachel Reeves allocating millions of pounds to revamp playgrounds across the UK. The Chancellor plans to invest £18 million in 200 children’s play areas that have been neglected during the previous administration.

Focusing on deprived areas, the funding aims to rejuvenate play spaces for children, providing safe and engaging environments for thousands of youngsters. According to a Treasury source, this initiative will not only enhance play areas but also empower communities by offering every child a place to play and develop.

Recent findings from the Raising the National Play Commission revealed the closure of over 400 playgrounds in England between 2012 and 2022. The report highlighted that existing playgrounds have suffered from neglect due to insufficient maintenance, with approximately two million children lacking easy access to these facilities within a 10-minute walk.

Eugene Minogue, the Executive Director of Play England, welcomed the playground funding as a significant step forward, signaling a renewed government focus on play. He emphasized the inequality in playground provision across England, particularly in less affluent areas.

Minogue stressed the importance of play for children’s development, stating that proper access to play opportunities is crucial for the future well-being of communities. Together with a proposed national play strategy, he believes this investment could bring about lasting positive changes for families and children throughout England.

Labour MP Tom Hayes, who leads the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Play, highlighted the long overdue attention playgrounds are receiving from lawmakers. He emphasized the necessity for every child to have access to safe, enjoyable, and inclusive play spaces, affirming the commitment to improving community well-being through this investment.
