Michael Schumacher has reportedly shown signs of improvement as he is now able to sit up and is no longer confined to a bed following extensive physical therapy. The Formula 1 icon has been out of the public eye since a skiing accident in December 2013 resulted in a severe head injury that altered his life.
Since the accident in the French Alps where he hit his head on a rock, Schumacher has been under the care of his wife, Corinna, and a dedicated team of healthcare professionals. After being in a medically induced coma for months, he returned home to Lake Geneva for ongoing treatment.
Despite maintaining a veil of secrecy around his condition, now at 57 years old, Schumacher splits his time between his properties in Switzerland and Majorca, with recent reports indicating positive developments in his health. According to The Daily Mail, Schumacher is now able to sit up, enabling him to be moved around his estates by medical staff, although he still cannot walk.
Contrary to speculation, Schumacher is said not to be experiencing Locked-in Syndrome, a condition where individuals are cognizant but can only communicate through eye movements. A source close to the family revealed that while it’s challenging to determine his level of understanding due to his inability to communicate verbally, there is a belief that he grasps some aspects of his surroundings.
The Schumacher family primarily resides in their lavish home in Gland, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva, but also spends time at a mansion in Majorca purchased by Corinna from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. Limited to a select few, Schumacher has only been visited by close family, friends, and staff since the accident, emphasizing the importance of privacy.
In a concerning incident in February 2025, three individuals were convicted for attempting to extort the Schumacher family by threatening to release personal photos, videos, and medical records on the dark web unless a substantial sum was paid. These confidential files had been stolen by a former security guard employed by the family.
While rumors circulated about Schumacher attending his daughter’s wedding at their Majorca residence in 2024, the Daily Mail clarified that he did not make a public appearance, respecting his privacy. As a seven-time F1 World Champion, Schumacher shares the record for the most titles with Lewis Hamilton and maintains ties with his former team, Ferrari, with individuals like ex-technical director Ross Brawn being among the few to have seen him post-accident.
