Matches Fashion is set to make a comeback next year after being acquired following its insolvency. The high-end fashion retailer collapsed in March 2024, reportedly owing over £210 million to top designer brands like Gucci and Anya Hindmarch.
Previously under the ownership of Frasers Group, Matches was purchased by Joe Wilkinson and Mario Maher, founders of the luxury shopping app Mile. The duo has now taken over Matches along with its in-house brand Raey, forming part of the new luxury conglomerate Hulcan, as reported by Vogue Business.
In an interview, Mr. Maher emphasized the importance of maintaining Matches’ legacy of curation, exclusivity, and quality products while introducing innovative changes. Mr. Wilkinson highlighted the significance of integrating brands, media, and technology to create a future-focused luxury ecosystem.
Matches, known for its online presence and a few physical stores in London, faced financial challenges leading to its collapse. Frasers Group expressed disappointment over Matches’ inability to meet business targets, resulting in substantial losses. Ultimately, Frasers Group supported Matches’ decision to enter administration due to the unfeasible restructuring requirements and financial demands.
Frasers reiterated its commitment to the luxury market and brand partnerships despite Matches’ tumultuous journey.
