In September 2012, Dan Markel, a dedicated father, Canadian-born lawyer, and law professor, was on a business trip. Upon returning home to Tallahassee, Florida, he was shocked to find his wife, Wendi, a clinical law professor, and their children missing, along with divorce papers. Their six-year marriage ended, leading to a contentious breakup.
The divorce was finalized in 2013 with a joint custody agreement in place. Wendi’s desire to relocate to Miami, near her parents, was denied by the court due to its distance from Dan and the children’s best interests, causing tension with the Adelson family.
The Adelsons, a wealthy family involved in a successful dentistry business, allegedly pressured Wendi to offer Dan $1 million for her freedom. Following this, Dan sought a court order to prevent unsupervised visits for the Adelson family, citing concerns about disparaging remarks made to his children.
Tragedy struck on July 18, 2014, when Dan was fatally shot in his car after dropping his children at preschool. Investigation pointed towards a connection between the custody battle and Dan’s murder, leading to a lengthy legal process.
In 2016, three individuals, including Katherine Magbanua, Sigfredo Garcia, and Luis Rivera, were arrested in connection with the killing. Rivera confessed to his involvement, revealing details of the orchestrated murder. Further investigations linked the trio to Charles Adelson, resulting in arrests and subsequent convictions.
Charles Adelson, found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in 2023, was sentenced to life in prison. His mother, identified as the mastermind behind the murder plot, was convicted on similar charges and also received a life sentence.
Throughout the trials, evidence emerged of Adelson’s orchestration of the murder plot and her contentious relationship with Dan. Despite maintaining her innocence, Adelson was sentenced to life in prison in October. The case, spanning over a decade, captivated the public due to its intricate and shocking details.
The conviction of Adelson marked the fifth individual held responsible for Dan’s murder, concluding a complex and gripping legal saga. Notably, Wendi and her father have not faced charges in connection to the case.
