A politician known for supporting Donald Trump has announced her resignation from Congress in a surprising move. Marjorie Taylor Greene stated in a 10-minute video that she is stepping down to spare her congressional district from a contentious primary battle against the former president. Despite her close ties to Trump, Greene emphasized that she refuses to be treated as a “battered wife” by the ex-President.

In her video statement, Greene expressed her decision, saying she values her self-respect, family, and district too much to subject them to a divisive primary contest orchestrated by Trump. She criticized the President for allegedly targeting her with millions of dollars to tarnish her reputation and suggested that defending him against potential impeachment would be untenable.

Known for her vocal support of Trump and previous controversial remarks, including telling a journalist to “go back to your country,” Greene has been a prominent figure in the MAGA movement. However, her relationship with Trump soured over disagreements on various issues, leading to her decision to resign.

Trump publicly denounced Greene as a “traitor” and indicated support for a primary challenger against her in the upcoming election. Despite facing criticism and opposition, Greene confirmed that her term in office will conclude on January 5, 2026. The White House has not commented on Greene’s resignation as of Friday night.

Greene’s departure highlights a pattern of clashes between Trump and dissenting Republicans, echoing similar confrontations with establishment members of the party. Trump’s recent interactions, including a controversial meeting with Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, have further fueled scrutiny over his political engagements.
