A 25-year-old man named Kyle Hayes Condon from Pairc an Tobair in Clonakilty, Co Cork, has been sentenced to jail for raping a 17-year-old girl whom he forcibly took to a secluded grassy area in West Cork. He admitted guilt to charges of rape, sexual assault, assault causing harm, and false imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court in Cork.
The incident, as detailed by Detective Garda Lisa O’Sullivan, took place in the early hours of February 16 when the victim was walking home after getting a lift from a party. Hayes Condon approached her, offering cocaine, before grabbing and dragging her to a grassy area where he proceeded to rape her. The victim, in fear for her life, managed to record his voice during the assault.
Hayes Condon, reportedly under the influence of a significant amount of cocaine that night, finally let the girl go after about twenty minutes. The traumatized victim, upon reaching home, revealed the assault to her parents and sought medical assistance at a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit.
In a powerful victim impact statement, the young girl expressed the profound impact the assault had on her daily life, causing physical and emotional distress. She emphasized feeling unsafe and vulnerable even within her own community after the harrowing experience.
Despite expressing deep remorse for his actions, Hayes Condon was sentenced to seven years in prison, with the final year suspended. The judge also ordered a 40-year no-contact order upon his release, effectively extending indefinitely to protect the victim.
