Luke Donald is set to engage in discussions with the DP World Tour in Dubai this week regarding the possibility of assuming the Ryder Cup captaincy for the third time in 2027. Shane Lowry, who shined at Bethpage Black, has encouraged Donald to continue leading in Ireland.
Having guided Europe to a remarkable away victory in Long Island last September following a successful campaign in Rome in 2021, the former world No.1 is contemplating the prestigious role. Notably, no European captain has secured three wins, with only Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher achieving the feat more than twice.
Donald, aged 48, is currently competing in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, marking his first tournament of the year. In addition to his on-course commitments, he will meet with DP World chief executive Guy Kinnings to discuss the Ryder Cup captaincy, as Europe faces a looming decision in the coming months.
“I will sit down for a chat with Guy this week just to see where I am,” said Donald. “I kinda know what the job entails but just to see what they are looking for. Just a chat. I have got a couple more months to decide. Usually they announce it sometime in March. It is a little bit more work at home.”
Lowry, who played a crucial role in securing a half point to retain the Ryder Cup in New York, expressed his support for Donald. “I think it’s Luke’s if he wants it,” mentioned the world No.26, highlighting the significance of potentially achieving a historic third consecutive victory.
As discussions unfold, Donald emphasized the importance of considering the impact on his family and the extensive planning required for a home Ryder Cup. Notably, support from fellow players like Rory McIlroy, Shane, and Fitzy has been encouraging, as Donald contemplates the decision.
In the event that Donald opts not to pursue the captaincy again, Vice-captain Francesco Molinari or Justin Rose could emerge as potential candidates. The upcoming Ryder Cup at Adare Manor awaits a decision that could shape Europe’s leadership for the prestigious event.
