London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticized US President Donald Trump, labeling him as racist, sexist, and Islamophobic. Trump, during his recent speech at the UN General Assembly in New York, once again targeted Khan, calling him a “terrible” mayor and suggesting a move towards sharia law in London.
In response, Khan remarked on the apparent fixation Trump has on him, questioning why a Muslim mayor leading a diverse and successful city seems to occupy so much space in the President’s thoughts. Khan further stated his view that Trump’s behavior reflects racism, sexism, and Islamophobia.
When asked about being called a “terrible” mayor, Khan highlighted the increasing number of Americans visiting London under his leadership, emphasizing the city’s global standing in culture, investment, sports, and overall potential fulfillment.
Various Labour MPs expressed support for Khan, dismissing Trump’s claims about London’s inclination towards sharia law as a misunderstanding. They emphasized London’s adherence to British law and its significance as a vibrant economic and creative hub.
Additionally, they praised Khan’s inclusive approach, citing his advocacy for diversity, LGBTQ+ rights, and efforts to enhance various aspects of city life. Furthermore, they rejected any insinuation that Khan would introduce sharia law in London.
In response to Trump’s comments, MPs called for the US ambassador to be summoned and condemned the President’s Islamophobic rhetoric, affirming London’s commitment to diversity and rejecting bigotry.
