A video has captured the terrifying incident where a young lion cub escaped and attacked a child in front of his shocked mother. The event took place on a street in Thailand’s Kanchanaburi province on October 4, with 11-year-old Arthit Nueangnui as the victim. The CCTV footage showed the lioness, aged one, breaking free and charging down the street around 9:15 pm local time, attacking the boy.
Fortunately, a brave bystander named Sarawut Tokaeo, 43, intervened by striking the lion’s head, allowing Arthit to escape the dangerous situation after sustaining injuries. Both Arthit and Sarawut received medical attention and are reported to be out of danger. Authorities later arrived at the owner’s residence on October 5, sedated the lioness named Mahaesee, and took her for evaluation and containment.
The owner, Parinya Parkpoom, 32, has been charged with violating wildlife conservation laws for releasing the wild animal without permission. This incident serves as a reminder for responsible animal ownership. The penalty for such offenses can include a fine of up to 50,000 baht (1,150 GBP) and a maximum prison sentence of six months. Parinya has taken responsibility, apologized to the affected families, agreed to cover medical costs, and arranged for Mahaesee to be transferred to a wildlife management center.
Parinya explained that the lioness escaped due to a broken chain while her enclosure was under renovation. He expressed remorse for the incident and acknowledged his accountability for the harm caused. Residents in the area expressed relief when wildlife officials safely removed Mahaesee, as she had previously escaped twice.
Arthit’s mother, Lek, expressed deep emotional distress over the incident, highlighting the psychological impact on her son. She praised Sarawut for his heroic actions in saving her child’s life. Lek shared the harrowing details of the attack and her son’s ongoing recovery, emphasizing the need for emotional healing and support.
Owning a lion in Thailand is permitted under strict regulations that require owners to obtain permits, register, and ensure proper facilities and safety measures. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in legal consequences, including fines, imprisonment, and confiscation of the animal.
