Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen has announced his resignation, citing lingering health issues resulting from a car accident last year. Chen, who has represented Scarborough North since 2015, revealed on social media that the injuries sustained in the accident have caused significant health challenges, limiting his ability to travel to Ottawa regularly for parliamentary duties. Following discussions with his family, Chen has made the decision to step down from his role as a Member of Parliament.
Prior to his political career, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude for Chen’s advocacy for youth and efforts to combat racism, wishing him a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors.
Chen’s resignation adds to the growing number of MPs stepping down this summer. Former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall are also set to vacate their seats soon. Conservative MP Larry Brock plans to resign in mid-September to join the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice will be leaving his Montreal seat to pursue provincial politics with Québec Solidaire in October. Chen’s resignation is scheduled for the end of this week.
