Liberal Democrat leaders are calling for measures to safeguard British politics from the influence of Nigel Farage and to “Trump-proof” the system. At the party’s annual conference in Bournemouth, Calum Miller, the party’s foreign affairs chief, delivered a critical speech labeling Farage as Donald Trump’s top supporter and accusing him of aligning with aggressors against the country’s interests.
Miller denounced Farage as a “fake patriot” who recently belittled Britain during a visit to the United States. He emphasized the need to resist Farage’s negative outlook on the nation and reject his brand of patriotism.
The Liberal Democrat leaders, including Sir Ed Davey, expressed concerns that Farage’s rise to power would backtrack on British values. Davey highlighted the importance of standing up to Farage’s ideas, which he believes are reminiscent of Trump’s policies and could hinder the progress of the country.
Davey hinted at the possibility of forming a coalition with other parties to prevent Farage from gaining significant political influence. He stressed the need to defend British values and uphold democracy in the face of emerging challenges.
