A recent study indicates that the financial burden of preparing children for the new school year is exacerbated by children’s persistent demands for trendy items. Parents often find themselves pressured by their kids to acquire the latest gadgets, shoes, and skincare products in addition to the usual expenses like school uniforms and sports gear, which can strain family budgets, particularly after a financially challenging summer.

According to a report by Back Market, parents are now expected to spend an average of £845 on new school-related items due to their children’s insistence. More than half of parents surveyed emphasized the necessity of purchasing a new school bag, even if the existing one is still functional.

Approximately one-third of parents reported feeling compelled to buy branded sneakers or a new lunchbox, while 28% said their children anticipate costly school trips. Moreover, 23% of parents have been informed by their kids about the need for a new laptop, and a similar percentage stated that their children desire a new iPhone or another high-end smartphone to keep up with their peers.

Some of the pestering for costly items is attributed to social media influences and online promotions. This push for extravagant purchases, like Stanley Cups and skincare trends, inevitably strains parents’ finances, with eight out of 10 parents admitting they will struggle to afford all the back-to-school essentials.

The survey also revealed that 36% of parents believe there is excessive importance placed on owning the latest technology and gear, while 25% think the costs have spiraled out of control. Additionally, three-quarters of parents claim their children frequently compare their possessions to those of their peers.

Luke Forshaw, the head of brand and marketing at Back Market, highlighted the significant financial burden placed on parents for back-to-school items, particularly tech products. He suggested that opting for refurbished technology can offer cost-effective solutions while ensuring quality devices and promoting environmental sustainability.

Overall, parents are urged to consider refurbished tech as a practical alternative to manage expenses and provide children with reliable devices at a reasonable cost.
