In Spain today, authorities successfully apprehended an infamous drug lord, Wilmer Chavarria, also known as “Pipo”, who had been evading capture for years by faking his own death. The joint operation involving Ecuadorian and Spanish officials led to the arrest of Chavarria, believed to be the head of Los Lobos, a drug trafficking group with approximately 8,000 members.

Recently labeled a terrorist organization by the United States, Los Lobos has been implicated in political assassinations in Ecuador and is known to collaborate closely with Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa disclosed that Chavarria staged his death in 2021, assumed a new identity, and relocated to Spain, where he oversaw drug shipments, ordered killings, and operated extortion schemes targeting gold mines in Ecuador.

Ecuador, once regarded as one of the most peaceful countries in South America earlier in the decade, has witnessed a surge in violent crimes, including homicides, as it transforms into a pivotal transit point for cocaine originating from neighboring Colombia and Peru. Drug trafficking factions have targeted political figures, officials, and journalists in battles for control over ports and coastal cities.

Chavarria’s arrest coincides with Ecuadorians voting on a referendum with a proposal to amend the nation’s constitution to permit foreign military bases in Ecuador, a move advocated by Noboa to enhance international anti-drug cooperation, particularly with the United States, and intensify the crackdown on drug traffickers.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a search operation has been launched in Moscow after the disturbing discovery of a young boy’s severed head inside a backpack dumped in Golyanovsky Pond. Initial reports indicate that the child was strangled and beheaded, as law enforcement sources revealed. The preliminary cause of death is suspected to be asphyxia, with signs of forced strangulation evident on the child’s neck. The victim, estimated to be between seven and ten years old, is yet to be identified, with reports suggesting the incident occurred two days prior. Despite an extensive search by divers, no additional remains were found in the lake, with the backpack recovered from a red plastic bag.
