Rescue teams in Indonesia have recovered three bodies from a ferry that capsized, increasing the death toll to nine, as 126 individuals remain missing. Divers successfully retrieved the bodies from the Virgo Transport 8 after five days of the vessel sinking due to adverse weather conditions. The operation involves around 60 divers working in shifts, part of a team of 1,100 personnel utilizing 17 ships and 5 aircraft, facing high-risk challenges that have slowed down progress.

The capsized 3,880-tonne ship, located approximately 800 kilometers northeast of Jakarta, was en route from Surabaya to Banjarmasin. Despite the passage of time, the mission remains a rescue operation, as survivors could potentially be trapped in sealed compartments. The diving conditions have improved, with currents dropping to safe levels, allowing navy divers to approach and enter the ship.

The rescue efforts have been complicated by 2.5-meter waves and strong winds near the vessel. The ferry eventually sank to the seabed in the Java Sea, which is between 40 and 50 meters deep. The unique design of the Virgo Transport 8, a roll-on/roll-off vessel with enclosed compartments, presents challenges for rescuers.

The salvage operation, mandated by law, began while rescue efforts were ongoing, adding another layer of complexity. Divers must navigate flooded compartments with limited visibility, potentially encountering air pockets that pose risks during emergency situations. Despite diminishing hopes among some families, the search will continue for at least a week, emphasizing the importance of valuing human life and maintaining hope for potential survivors.
