Chatting with residents in any community will reveal that the rising cost of living is a major concern for many. This issue has always been a priority for me, whether advocating for more affordable infant formula or assisting families in avoiding predatory lenders.

Last year, I extensively traveled across the country, engaging with our 30,000 dedicated Iceland employees and the five million customers we serve weekly. Our insights were compiled into the ‘Iceland Manifesto,’ released just before the previous year’s election.

Our research indicated that people felt disconnected from politicians and were grappling with the increasing costs of various necessities such as child care, veterinary expenses, heating, and groceries. These worries persist, highlighting the urgent need for action. The affordability of living expenses continues to be the foremost concern in people’s daily lives.

My decision to join the House of Lords as a Labour peer is driven by a desire to bring practical business perspectives from the high street to Westminster, amplifying the voices of businesses and communities nationwide. I have always admired the depth of knowledge in the House of Lords and the caliber of its discussions.

It is a privilege to contribute my insights as a retailer and entrepreneur. I aim to offer a unique viewpoint, drawing from my experience leading a family business that provides employment for many and offers affordable, high-quality food to millions.

Having experienced firsthand the challenges of meeting payroll obligations as a business owner and understanding the struggles of families to put nutritious meals on the table daily, I am committed to representing these perspectives in my new role.

The current Labour Government’s primary focus on fostering economic growth is commendable, with a commitment to removing hindrances that impede progress. Sustainable growth relies on private enterprise, which necessitates a conducive environment for investment and a stable regulatory and tax framework.

I firmly believe that solutions cannot solely come from Westminster, but from individuals who are directly involved and can communicate candidly. In my upcoming responsibilities, I pledge to uphold this principle.
