Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently discussed the enduring success of her book series during an interview. When she initially wrote “The Gruffalo” over two decades ago, she had doubts about its potential. Despite its dark themes and unconventional format, the book defied expectations and became a hit.
Now, after 26 years, Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler have released “Gruffalo Granny,” the latest addition to the beloved series. This new installment features the original Gruffalo and his child preparing for the arrival of Gruffalo Granny, who is known for her enormous appetite. The mouse protagonist once again faces peril in the story.
Donaldson explained that the process of writing “Gruffalo Granny” mirrored her experience with “The Gruffalo,” focusing on crafting a compelling narrative rather than catering to a specific audience. The promotion of “Gruffalo Granny” has seen unprecedented success, with the book quickly becoming the top-selling book in the U.K. in 2026 across all genres and age groups.
With over 227,000 copies sold in just three days, “Gruffalo Granny” has set a record as the fastest-selling picture book in the U.K. The publisher attributes this achievement to the enduring appeal of Donaldson and Scheffler’s storytelling and characters. Despite concluding the Gruffalo series, Donaldson is gearing up to release a new book titled “Winnifred Duck,” inspired by a real-life event involving rubber ducks lost at sea.
As her career as a children’s writer continues, Donaldson remains committed to creating engaging and educational stories for young readers.
