German intelligence has revealed information indicating that the Kremlin is contemplating an assault on NATO, according to a senior EU defense official. European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, emphasized the importance of Europe being prepared to protect itself from potential Russian threats, drawing lessons from Ukraine’s utilization of drones.

In an interview with the Polish publication Wyborcza, Kubilius expressed concern over the situation, stating that German intelligence has evidence suggesting discussions within the Kremlin about an attack on NATO. He stressed the need to take such signals seriously, as they could signify preparations for conflict. Kubilius highlighted the significance of learning from both Ukrainian and Russian experiences to be adequately prepared.

The escalation of tensions between Russia and Western nations has been evident, with exchanges of accusations between Putin and Trump regarding the capabilities of NATO and Russia. Putin criticized NATO allies for fueling fears of a potential attack on a member state and accused the alliance of providing support to Ukraine. Amid these developments, there have been increased airspace violations in NATO countries, with some attributing these incidents to Russia possibly testing NATO’s response capabilities.

Recent events, including a swarm of Russian drones entering Polish airspace on September 10, leading to NATO aircraft interception and downing of some drones, marked a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia since the commencement of the conflict in Ukraine. Subsequent incidents, such as Russian warplanes being escorted out of Estonia’s airspace by NATO jets, indicate ongoing tensions and potential provocations.

While Russia has denied any deliberate wrongdoing or involvement in these events, European authorities have been cautious in releasing detailed accounts of the incidents. Some reports suggest that Russia’s actions could be strategic maneuvers to gauge NATO’s reactions and test the preparedness of European defenses.
