Formula 1 teams have just entered their mandatory summer break, allowing drivers and staff to finally take some time off. The shutdown period, enforced by the FIA, began on Monday, August 11, and lasts for 14 consecutive calendar days. During this period, all Formula 1-related activities are strictly prohibited to ensure fairness and prevent performance-related work.

Teams are not allowed to engage in any car performance activities, including using wind tunnels, simulators, or working on design improvements. Even discussions or correspondence related to performance enhancements are off-limits, with severe penalties for any violations. However, non-performance staff, like those in marketing and legal departments, are permitted to continue their duties.

While performance-related work halts, essential site maintenance activities are allowed to proceed. This includes deep cleaning of facilities, servicing of equipment, and maintenance of critical systems like lighting and air conditioning. The shutdown aims to manage team expenditures under the sport’s budget cap and prioritize staff well-being in a demanding racing season with multiple events across the globe.

The break ends just before the Dutch Grand Prix at the end of August, ensuring teams have ample time to prepare for the upcoming races. Following this break, teams will continue with a packed schedule of 10 race weekends in just 15 weeks. Additionally, a second mandatory shutdown occurs after the season ends, allowing staff to debrief, participate in post-season tests, and enjoy the holiday season with their families.
