A prosecutor informed jurors during the opening statements of a murder trial in Clark County, Nevada, that a former street gang leader was behind the 1996 drive-by shooting of hip-hop star Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas. The alleged motive was retaliation for an assault on the gang leader’s nephew. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, 63, faces a murder charge in connection with the shooting, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Davis is accused of orchestrating the attack on Shakur, a prominent figure in the rap industry, near the Las Vegas Strip.
The prosecutor emphasized that Davis ensured the shooters were prepared to carry out the attack, as revealed in recent statements made by Davis himself. Defense attorney Michael Sanft argued that after three decades, there is limited tangible evidence to support the case against Davis, questioning the credibility of Davis’s accounts provided in interviews and his book.
The shooting of Shakur added to the perception of violence in hip-hop culture, particularly during the era of “gangsta” rap, fueling tensions in the East Coast-West Coast rap feud. Davis, described as the mastermind behind the shooting, allegedly sought retribution for the altercation between Shakur and his entourage and a rival gang at the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas.

In his interviews and book, Davis detailed his involvement in the shooting, claiming he passed the weapon to an associate in the vehicle before the attack on Shakur’s car. However, the identity of the actual shooter remains undisclosed. With all other individuals in the vehicle having since passed away, Davis could still be held liable for murder under Nevada law, even if he did not directly pull the trigger.
