Instead of a joyous celebration of the World Cup draw, the event turned into a somber display of one man’s political flattery.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, known for his admiration of the “Make America Great Again” movement, presented a newly minted “Peace Prize” to US President Donald Trump. The ceremony, held near the White House at the Kennedy Centre under the presidency of Trump, was already saturated with political undertones.

The football world was shocked by the public display of adoration towards a US President who, despite being honored for “peace,” is engaged in military actions near Venezuela and considering rewarding Vladimir Putin for his aggressive moves in Ukraine.

A video tribute exclusively dedicated to Trump played on large screens, leading to the unveiling of a monumental trophy with his name engraved on it. Infantino returned to the stage amid applause to officially declare Trump as the inaugural recipient of the FIFA Peace Prize.

Trump received a gold medal, which he promptly placed around his own neck, followed by a certificate. The ceremony felt excessive, almost bordering on absurdity.

This spectacle was met with disgust by many as FIFA, once tarnished by corruption scandals, now appeared as a global public relations tool for a polarizing world leader.

Infantino, showing excessive admiration without criticism, stood next to a president involved in military actions and contributing to global unrest through his foreign policies.

In a self-congratulatory speech, Trump appeared to relish the attention as if receiving the Nobel Peace Prize rather than a hastily created award from the head of international football.

No mention was made of ongoing conflicts, displaced civilians, or the irony of celebrating “peace” amidst active hostilities.

Infantino shamelessly took a grinning selfie with Trump, while Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum and Canada’s Mark Carney distanced themselves from the display of mutual admiration, avoiding any association with the spectacle.

Despite Infantino’s claims of FIFA’s political neutrality, his relationship with Trump has evolved from uneasy to distasteful. The event at the draw was not diplomacy; it was idolization.

The episode did not revolve around football, unity, or sports’ ability to bridge gaps but rather showcased ego, power, and mutual flattery between two individuals who view the world and the sport as platforms for their personal ambitions.

Under the spotlight and amidst orchestrated applause, the beautiful game turned ugly. Football enthusiasts worldwide helplessly witnessed its essence being sacrificed for a mere spectacle.
