A strong sou’easter wind intensified, causing choppy waves during a lobster fishing trip in Aldouane, N.B. Amid the rough seas, laughter filled the air as my mother urged me to navigate the boat boldly. As we rode the waves, the boat swayed, and tension mounted when we encountered a challenging turn at the convergence of currents, causing the boat to veer unexpectedly. With my mom’s firm command to hold on, I clung to a pole as the boat lurched violently, momentarily defying gravity. Despite the perilous moment, my mom skillfully steered us back on course, guiding us to calmer waters along the Richibucto River.

After narrowly escaping a perilous situation, we learned of a nearby boat sinking, underscoring the dangers of the sea. Embracing our maritime heritage, my family’s connection to the ocean runs deep. My mother, a trailblazing female lobster captain with over two decades of experience, paved the way for me to follow in her footsteps as a deckhand. Despite the industry’s male-dominated nature, my mother’s resilience challenged stereotypes and inspired me to pursue a career at sea.

Fishing has become a sanctuary for me, a place of both tranquility and unpredictability. Whether admiring the starry night sky or weathering storms, each moment at sea is a blend of serenity and risk. The ocean’s beauty is matched only by its unforgiving nature, a reminder of life’s unpredictability. As a female in a hazardous profession, I share the same fears and challenges as my male counterparts, proving that gender does not dictate one’s ability at sea.

My mother’s legacy has opened doors for women in the industry, fostering a sense of camaraderie among us. As we navigate the uncertainties of the fishing trade, we find strength in unity and shared experiences. The sea, with its ever-changing moods, serves as a metaphor for life’s trials and triumphs. Despite the hardships, I am determined to continue my fishing journey, embracing the risks and rewards that come with it.

In a world of uncertainties, one thing remains constant: our dedication to the sea and the shared bond that unites us as sailors. Whether labeled fishermen, fisherwomen, or fish harvesters, our collective mission is clear — to brave the elements, provide for our communities, and savor the fruits of our labor. As I look ahead, I aspire to one day captain my own vessel, embracing the challenges and adventures that lie ahead.
