A man whose child is a student has been arrested following a deadly shooting incident at Kentucky State University. The father, identified as Jacod Lee Bard from Evansville, Indiana, is facing charges of murder and first-degree assault. The tragic event occurred on the university’s campus in Frankfort, resulting in the death of 19-year-old De’Jon Fox and leaving another student critically wounded.

Authorities reported that Bard allegedly targeted the victims at a hall of residence, leading to the fatal shooting. While the motive behind the attack remains undisclosed, law enforcement officials have categorized it as an isolated incident. The parent was apprehended promptly after the shooting, which was said to stem from a confrontation.

Speculations have arisen regarding a potential altercation involving Bard’s son prior to the shooting or the father’s visit to discuss safety concerns with school administrators. However, these claims have not been confirmed by the authorities. Frankfort Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy refrained from addressing the circulating rumors, stating that it is premature to provide detailed information on the events leading up to the tragedy.

The shooting took place at Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall, marking the second shooting incident within four months at the university’s residence halls. The earlier occurrence involved non-students being targeted, resulting in injuries and property damage. In response to the incidents, University President Koffi C. Akakpo emphasized the institution’s commitment to student safety, highlighting increased police presence following the initial shooting and a forthcoming safety assessment.

Kentucky State University, a public historically Black institution with approximately 2,200 students, has been deeply affected by the recent violence. Bard is currently being represented by a public defender, and further details regarding his case have not been disclosed by the Franklin County Department of Public Advocacy.
