The family of a British police officer who passed away under unclear circumstances while on vacation in Corfu in 2023 is seeking closure regarding her final hours. Hannah Byrne, a 22-year-old serving with Surrey Police, was discovered deceased by a passerby with a fatal head injury after getting separated from her friend during a night out.
According to reports, Hannah encountered two individuals she had met earlier in the evening and was observed on CCTV ascending a building’s roof with them before the strangers descended without her. Her family expressed frustration over the lack of communication with these individuals by the authorities.
An inquest into Hannah’s demise was postponed pending information from Greek officials, with calls from Dorking and Horley MP Chris Coghlan for justice to prevail. The family continues to grapple with unanswered questions regarding the circumstances leading to Hannah’s tragic death.
Initial reports suggested Hannah had tripped and hit railings, later amended to indicate she had fallen from a rooftop. Speculation arose about potential methanol contamination in her drink, prompting a probe into the island’s alcohol supply.
Hannah’s relatives emphasize the importance of speaking to the individuals last seen with her, emphasizing the need for closure. The Greek Police revealed that Hannah suffered multiple injuries, including a fatal head trauma, potentially caused by a fall from a height.
Hannah’s brother expressed ongoing difficulty accepting her loss and stressed the significance of obtaining more details to aid the grieving process. The investigation aims to determine the contents of the alcohol consumed by Hannah, with toxicology tests expected to provide crucial insights.
While criminal involvement has been ruled out, the cause of Hannah’s passing has been attributed to an accident. Described as kind, funny, and caring, Hannah is fondly remembered by her family and colleagues at Surrey Police Federation, who extend their sympathies during this challenging time.
