An explosion occurred near a train station in Augsburg, Germany, prompting a temporary closure of the transport hub on Wednesday morning. Following the discovery of a suspicious object, authorities closed the station but later confirmed the object to be harmless. The station was reopened at 10 a.m., and train services resumed.
Police spokesperson Timo Küfner stated that the object found in front of the train station posed no threat, leading to the reopening of the station. The incident, which involved an unidentified object exploding near the station around 3:15 a.m., caused minor injuries to a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens.
Subsequently, another suspicious object that did not detonate was found at the main train station, prompting the station’s closure at 8:30 a.m. Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office were dispatched to investigate the scene.
Küfner mentioned that the motive behind the explosion was still under investigation. The disruption caused road traffic and public transportation in the vicinity of the station during the early hours of the morning.
According to reports, a hand grenade detonated in front of a jewelry store in the early morning, indicating that the train station was not the primary target of the incident. Augsburg, located in Bavaria and home to 308,000 residents, is situated approximately 78 kilometers northwest of Munich.
Recently, the German government accused Russia of an attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport using an explosive-laden drone. This incident, which occurred last month, led to Germany announcing measures against Moscow, including the closure of a Russian consulate. The drone, found near a Ukrainian aircraft, was defused, raising concerns about heightened security risks.
Western officials have accused Moscow of engaging in sabotage and disruption activities across Europe to destabilize nations and undermine support for Ukraine.
