Europe has deployed a compact missile dubbed the “Mark 1” to counter Russian incursions on the continent. Manufactured by Estonian company Frankenburg Technology, the missile, measuring just 65cm in length, is designed to target Russian drones infiltrating European airspace.
The Mark 1 missiles, equipped with solid rocket propellant and autonomous guidance, are tailored to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles like the Iranian-made Shahed-131 and Shahed-136 models used by Russia in its ongoing invasion efforts. These missiles are capable of detonating a warhead within a range of two kilometers from the target.
Kusti Salm, the CEO of Frankenburg Technology, emphasized the importance of these missiles in countering Russian drones, which have breached European borders from Ukraine. Salm highlighted the necessity of such capabilities in Western defense strategies for the foreseeable future.
European nations have faced increasing challenges from Russian territorial violations, prompting NATO to respond with costly jet defenses against Russia’s inexpensive munitions. Recent incidents, including a drone sighting near Brussels airport, have underscored the urgent need for enhanced defense mechanisms in Europe.
Sir Richard Knighton, the UK’s Chief of the Defence Staff, stressed the importance of forging stronger alliances in the face of growing hybrid threats. He emphasized the collective resolve needed to protect critical infrastructure and airspace in Europe.
