England’s fast bowler Mark Wood may face a prolonged absence due to injury, potentially missing upcoming matches as England made a strong comeback in the Ashes. Joe Root’s exceptional unbeaten century, his first in Australia, propelled England to a commanding position on day one of the second Test at The Gabba.

Root’s impressive 135 not out guided England to 325-9, supported by Zak Crawley’s 76 and Jofra Archer’s 32 not out. Despite some positive moments for the Australians, the day belonged to Ben Stokes’ team.

Wood, nursing a knee injury, initially ruled out for the second Test, now faces uncertainty for the next match in Adelaide. The 35-year-old expressed doubts about his return before Christmas, indicating a potential comeback in Melbourne or Sydney.

Wood has struggled with injuries throughout his career, with his recent appearance in Perth marking his first Test in 15 months due to an elbow issue. His absence in Brisbane led to Will Jacks’ inclusion in the squad as a replacement.

Former England captain Michael Atherton highlighted Wood’s importance in the Ashes series, emphasizing his role as a key fast bowler. Wood’s absence led to a tactical shift with the inclusion of spinner Jacks in the team.

In response to Root’s stellar performance, Mitchell Starc shone for Australia, claiming 6-71 with the pink ball. The ongoing Ashes series, starting on November 21, can be watched live on TNT Sports via discovery+ or Prime Video.
