Canadian conservationists and wildlife experts have expressed concern following the decision by the U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to relax habitat protections for endangered species in July. The U.S. Department of the Interior announced on July 10 that it would rescind a long-standing definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Numerous wildlife and environmental organizations have criticized the move, stating that it disregards the fragile ecosystems that endangered species rely on amid ongoing biodiversity decline and industrial activities. A group of nearly a dozen organizations has initiated legal action in the U.S. District Court to challenge the repeal, which is set to take effect on September 14.
According to Canadian experts, this change could pose a threat to animals that traverse between both countries, including species that move across borders for various reasons such as food, reproduction, or seasonal migration. Some of these species include migratory birds, northern spotted owls, grizzly bears, and southern resident killer whales, which move between U.S. and Canadian waters without distinction.
The alteration in the definition of harm to endangered species by the U.S. administration has raised significant concerns among conservationists. The move is viewed as undermining decades of species protection efforts and could have adverse effects on wildlife populations in Canada as well.

Both Canada and the U.S. are urged to enhance conservation efforts and enact robust laws to safeguard endangered species amid escalating environmental challenges.
