A man who was convicted of murdering a mother over 30 years ago was executed on death row today.
Mark Allen Geralds, aged 58, became the 18th individual to be executed on death row in Florida this year. He received a lethal injection of three drugs at a correctional facility. Prior to his execution, Geralds spoke some last words expressing love and regret, though the recipient’s name was unclear. Once the drugs took effect, he exhibited physical reactions before becoming motionless within minutes.
Geralds’ execution followed more than 36 years after he committed the murder of Tressa Pettibone in her residence. The victim’s body was found by her son upon returning from school in Panama City, Florida.
Following the execution at Florida State Prison near Starke, a spokesperson read a statement on behalf of Ms. Pettibone’s family, expressing relief after years of legal processes. The family remembered the victim as a devoted wife, mother, and friend, whose life revolved around her loved ones.
According to relatives, Ms. Pettibone cherished the holiday season, being particularly fond of Christmas. She adorned her home with festive decorations and handmade gifts, a tradition her family continues to honor annually.
Geralds, a carpenter who had worked at Ms. Pettibone’s residence, was reported to have interacted with the victim and her children before the crime took place. Evidence linking him to the murder, including pawned jewelry with the victim’s blood and matching ties, led to his conviction and death sentence in 1990.
Although his initial death sentence was overturned, Geralds was resentenced to death in 1992 after his conviction for murder and related charges was upheld by the Florida Supreme Court.
