Tributes are being paid to a mother of two who tragically lost her life in a plane crash on a road in Prince George last week. The victim, identified as Alex Garneau, was struck by a twin-engine Beech King Air 200 as it landed on Foothills Boulevard, crossing three lanes and hitting four vehicles. Garneau was actively involved in the community, especially in sports where she participated as an athlete, coach, and volunteer, notably supporting her children’s teams.

A fundraising initiative has been established to assist Garneau’s family, portraying her as a devoted wife, daughter, sister, friend, and a dedicated hockey mom who fostered a sense of belonging for everyone. Described as the driving force behind her children’s activities, the fundraiser highlighted her organizational skills, support, and enthusiasm. Her children, both outstanding individuals and hockey players, were recipients of her big aspirations for their futures.

Numerous social media posts from organizations she was associated with echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing her integral role within the community. The Cariboo Cougars minor hockey club remembered Garneau as a vibrant and creative individual who brought positivity and energy to every rink encounter. The Prince George Youth Volleyball Club acknowledged her significant contributions to volleyball in the region, from her high school playing days to coaching at a competitive level.

Within two days of its launch, the fundraiser amassed over $100,000, with the proceeds designated to support Garneau’s family during this challenging time. As investigations into the incident continue, the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) reported that the plane made an emergency landing due to engine failure. The aircraft has been relocated to a nearby gravel pit under TSB supervision for further examination.

The Beech King Air 200 was en route from Sturdee Airstrip to Prince George Airport and carried eight individuals, including two pilots and six passengers, none of whom sustained injuries. Registered to Sekani Air Ltd., a local charter flight company, the plane’s crash has raised questions regarding its operational capabilities. Former TSB investigator Bill Yearwood highlighted the need to determine the factors leading to the crash, emphasizing the critical decisions pilots must make during emergencies.
