Stephen Eustaquio eagerly accepted the opportunity to join Swansea City without hesitation. Following his pivotal role in Canada’s advancement to the World Cup knockout stage, the midfielder was enticed by the chance to aid the Welsh club in their pursuit of a Premier League return and reunite with a familiar coach.

Swansea City recently disclosed the signing of the 29-year-old from Porto, securing his services under a two-year contract with an option for an additional season. Eustaquio emphasized the significant influence of working with head coach Vitor Matos, a former colleague at Porto, in his decision-making process.

Expressing his excitement, Eustaquio stated, “The decision was almost automatic for me. I am confident in the direction we’re heading, and I am thrilled to have made this choice.” Despite Swansea’s 11th-place finish in the Championship last season, well below the promotion playoff positions, Eustaquio acknowledges the challenging journey ahead for the team to reclaim a Premier League spot.

Describing his motivation, Eustaquio remarked, “The aspiration of contributing to a prominent club striving to ascend to the top league was a compelling draw for me. While the path may be arduous, approaching each match strategically could foster a remarkable atmosphere in the stadium, potentially leading to a memorable season. Anything is possible.”

Originally from Leamington, Ontario, and raised by Portuguese parents, Eustaquio relocated to Portugal in his youth. Prior to his tenure at Porto, he competed for Chaves in Portugal and Cruz Azul in Mexico. Accumulating over 150 appearances during his four-and-a-half-year stint at Porto, Eustaquio briefly joined Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC on loan earlier this year.

With 61 caps for Canada and participation in the last two World Cups, Eustaquio played a significant role in the national team’s recent achievements. Notably, he secured a crucial stoppage-time goal in Canada’s 1-0 triumph against South Africa in the Round of 32 at the summer tournament, where Canada was eventually eliminated by Morocco. Additionally, he assumed the captaincy in several matches due to Alphonso Davies’ injury.

Reflecting on his World Cup experience, Eustaquio shared, “This summer was extraordinary. It was a dream come true for us as a nation to progress so far in such a prestigious tournament. The records we set were remarkable, and contributing with that goal against South Africa brought immense joy.”

Eustaquio is set to don the No. 46 jersey for Swansea and may make his debut in the upcoming match against Derby County this weekend.
