In a significant advancement for Britain’s defense capabilities, the innovative DragonFire laser has successfully intercepted fast-moving drones during recent trials at the MOD’s Hebrides range. These drones can reach speeds of up to 650km/h, surpassing the velocity of a Formula 1 car. The state-of-the-art laser system, reminiscent of Star Wars technology, boasts a low cost of only £10 per shot and remarkable precision, capable of hitting a £1 coin from a kilometer away.
Following these successful trials, a £316 million contract has been granted to MBDA to supply new systems to the Royal Navy by 2027, accelerating the installation on a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer by five years compared to the original schedule. As part of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), DragonFire marks a pivotal development as the first high-power laser system from a European country, positioning it as a leading directed energy weapon program within NATO.
The cutting-edge DragonFire laser is expected to generate and maintain 590 jobs throughout the UK, showcasing the defense sector as a driver of economic growth. This initiative will create 200 highly skilled positions in Scotland, 185 jobs in the South West of England, and 75 jobs in the East of England, aligning with the Government’s Plan for Change.
