Viewers of the reality show Big Brother U.K. are facing backlash for a heated discussion on transgender rights, pronouns, single-sex bathrooms, and the participation of transgender athletes in sports. The incident occurred on the latest episode of the popular competition series, where a group of strangers known as “house guests” or “housemates” live together in isolation in a specially designed house, competing in challenges and eviction rounds to win a cash prize.

During the episode, two new contestants, Twinks Burnett, 36, and Catrin Richards, 23, entered the house. The debate, which was shared on the show’s official social media, was sparked by Burnett initiating a conversation about LGBTQIA+ allyship and gender identity.

Housemate Philip Regan, a gay participant, expressed his support for freedom of speech, emphasizing the evolving nature of gender pronouns in society. He stressed the importance of respecting individuals’ self-identification and sexual orientation.

The discussion also touched on the topic of transgender individuals using gender-specific restrooms, with house guest Rochelle Rackham expressing discomfort with sharing a restroom with a transgender person. Burnett emphasized the significance of fostering a sense of community to bridge differences.

Following the exchange, social media users urged the network ITV to address the comments made by Rackham and Regan, accusing them of exhibiting transphobic behavior. The conversation highlighted the ongoing societal debate in the U.K. surrounding transgender rights, including issues related to the legal definition of sex, the inclusion of transgender athletes in sports, and access to gender-affirming healthcare.

The controversy unfolded amid the upcoming revival of Big Brother Canada, signaling a new season’s premiere in April 2027. The show, originating in the Netherlands in the late 1990s, has seen international success across various countries, with the Canadian version set for a return following a two-year hiatus. Bell Media’s agreement also encompasses the airing of previous seasons and the French-language series Big Brother Célébrités.

For individuals affected by homophobia, transphobia, or seeking support, resources are available through 2SLGBTQ+ services on the It Gets Better Canada’s website.
