EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Bitdefender cybersecurity experts have flagged urgent messages targeting EE customers, claiming that they are at risk of losing thousands of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
The scammers are posing as the popular EE network to trick individuals into clicking on malicious links that direct them to fake websites. These fraudulent sites are set up to steal login credentials for financial gain, relying on the urgency of the situation to prompt swift responses without much thought.
Bitdefender noted that scammers exploit a sense of urgency by creating tight deadlines, pushing users to act hastily. The links in these messages do not lead to EE’s official website but to a deceptive site.
Genuine EE alerts are only issued through official EE accounts, not via unsolicited texts. Any message demanding quick action or featuring a countdown should be treated as suspicious. If users receive such texts, they are advised to forward them to 7726 and delete them immediately.
This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, with reports of similar fake reward points messages earlier this year. Victims have shared experiences of being lured by seemingly authentic links to fraudulent EE websites.
EE has clarified that it does not operate a points program and has highlighted examples of scam messages circulating, such as enticing users with the promise of free points that will expire soon.
In response, EE has reiterated crucial advice to users:
– Avoid clicking on unknown links in text messages
– Refrain from responding to suspicious messages
– Do not call the provided phone numbers in such messages
– Never disclose personal or financial information
EE users are reminded to exercise caution to avoid falling prey to such scams and to remain vigilant against fraudulent messages.
