Shabana Mahmood raised concerns about an increasing trend in the UK towards ethno-nationalism from patriotism. The Home Secretary emphasized the need for stricter migration policies to counter the allure of “false promises” by Nigel Farage if Labour fails to take decisive action. She outlined measures to make it more challenging to obtain indefinite leave to remain in the UK, with a focus on societal contribution as a key criterion for residency.

Emphasizing the importance of securing the UK’s borders and addressing small boat crossings, Mahmood addressed the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, pointing out the deep societal divisions highlighted by a recent march organized by Tommy Robinson. She acknowledged the presence of extremist groups but stressed the broader societal shifts leading some individuals towards ethno-nationalism.

Mahmood highlighted the impact of immigration on public trust and criticized the Tories for what she described as a “rank betrayal.” She introduced policy changes requiring individuals to have lived in the UK for ten years before being eligible for indefinite leave to remain, along with additional criteria such as employment, English proficiency, clean criminal record, and community engagement.

In response to Mahmood’s proposals, Green MP Carla Denyer criticized the restrictions on Indefinite Leave to Remain, advocating for more inclusive policies such as allowing asylum seekers to work. Denyer argued that migration benefits the UK economically and culturally, calling for a shift towards community-centered migration approaches rather than mere reduction in numbers.

Denyer urged for a fairer system that empowers migrants to contribute positively to the economy and society, suggesting practical solutions like enabling asylum seekers to work. She criticized Mahmood’s approach as detached from the realities of migration issues, calling for more sensible and inclusive strategies.
