Robert Jenrick is facing criticism for advocating a plan reminiscent of Trump’s approach that could potentially diminish the independence of the Supreme Court in favor of politicians. The Shadow Justice Secretary launched a scathing attack on judges during a conference speech, vowing to reinstate ministerial control over judicial appointments.

In a dramatic gesture, the prominent Conservative figure brandished a judge’s wig, emphasizing his commitment to preventing any political bias in judicial appointments. Allegations surfaced regarding judges with affiliations to open borders charities and who expressed pro-open borders sentiments on social media, prompting concerns about their impartiality.

However, the Government swiftly rebuked Mr. Jenrick, accusing him of undermining British values by jeopardizing the integrity of essential institutions. Lord Sumption, a former Supreme Court Justice, cautioned against the dismissal of “activist” judges, warning that granting more power to politicians over the judiciary could mirror the American system’s potential pitfalls.

Mr. Jenrick’s proposal to empower British politicians with greater influence over judicial appointments received strong opposition from Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy. Lammy emphasized the critical role of judicial independence in upholding British democracy and criticized any attempts to erode this fundamental principle.

During his speech, Mr. Jenrick condemned judges who blurred the line between adjudication and activism, expressing his determination to restore the judiciary’s proper role under parliamentary oversight. He announced plans to restore the traditional authority of the Lord Chancellor in appointing judges, aiming to eliminate political biases in the selection process.

In a separate development, concerns were raised about Mr. Jenrick potentially prejudicing future legal proceedings involving the decision to drop terrorism charges against Liam Og O hAnnaidh, a member of the Kneecap rap group. The Attorney General advised caution in public statements to avoid influencing any forthcoming legal actions related to the case.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed its intention to appeal the decision to dismiss the charges against O hAnnaidh, signaling ongoing legal complexities surrounding the case.
