Formula One icon Michael Schumacher, known for his legendary racing career, now communicates primarily through eye movements, almost a dozen years after a tragic skiing accident altered his life. Since sustaining a severe brain injury in the French Alps in December 2013, Schumacher has been away from the public eye, with his wife Corinna taking charge of his well-being.

Initially, many of Schumacher’s supporters held out hope for a full recovery for the seven-time F1 champion. However, over time, they have come to terms with the reality that Schumacher may never make a public return.

Despite the limited access to the Schumacher household, bits of information regarding the former racer’s current state have surfaced. Elisabetta Gregoraci, the former spouse of ex-Benetton chief Flavio Briatore, disclosed in 2020 that Schumacher now communicates non-verbally, relying on his eyes to interact.

Corinna, who tied the knot with Schumacher in 1995, has been overseeing her husband’s care diligently since his life-changing accident. Due to the strict protocols in place, only a select few are permitted to visit the racing legend.

Reports emerged in September 2024 suggesting that Schumacher made a rare public appearance at his daughter’s wedding in Mallorca. Despite conflicting reports, it was alleged that Schumacher attended the ceremony, with guests reportedly asked to surrender their mobile devices to prevent unauthorized photographs.

While most of Schumacher’s care occurs at their residence in Lake Geneva, Switzerland, the family’s property in Mallorca, acquired in 2017 for £27 million from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, has also played a significant role. Initial speculations of a permanent relocation to Mallorca were later debunked.

Despite his absence from the public spotlight, Schumacher continues to hold a special place in the hearts of F1 enthusiasts and acquaintances alike. Jean Todt, Schumacher’s former Ferrari team principal, spoke fondly of their bond but acknowledged the stark change in Schumacher’s condition, emphasizing the crucial support provided by his wife and children.
