South Carolina State University is currently on lockdown due to reported gunfire on Saturday evening. The sound of shots was detected at Hugine Suites on the campus, as confirmed by the university’s Department of Public Safety. Students living on campus have been instructed to return to their residence halls, while off-campus residents have been advised to vacate the premises.

Congresswoman Nancy Mace expressed her concerns on Twitter, urging everyone at South Carolina State University to stay safe and follow law enforcement instructions. An alert on the university’s website announced the campus lockdown, cancelling the scheduled Homecoming concert for the night.

Officials have not yet provided detailed information about the incident, including the identity of any potential shooter or any casualties. Senator Tim Scott stated that his office is closely monitoring the situation and offered prayers for the safety of everyone on campus. South Carolina State University, located in Orangeburg, previously faced a similar lockdown in February 2024, where no injuries were reported, and the suspect was apprehended.

The university’s spokesperson confirmed the 2024 incident was swiftly resolved without injuries, with a suspect arrested and charged for carrying a firearm on school premises. The situation is currently under investigation.
