Aldi has once again been named the most cost-effective supermarket in the UK in the latest price assessment conducted by Which?. In September, the total cost for 71 items at Aldi averaged £122.77, making it £1.18 less expensive than a similar shopping list at Lidl, which totaled £123.95 on average.

Which? conducts monthly comparisons of the average prices of a selection of popular groceries at the eight largest supermarket chains. The evaluation includes regular prices, promotional prices, and loyalty discounts but excludes bulk purchase discounts.

In the recent analysis, none of the items included were cheaper for Lidl Plus members. The list of items encompassed both branded and own-label products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

Tesco secured the third spot in the ranking, with the average bill for Clubcard holders amounting to £135.64. Without a Clubcard, the same shopping list at Tesco cost £138.66.

Sainsbury’s Nectar card users spent an average of £138.74 in September, while non-cardholders paid £142.70 for the same items at Sainsbury’s.

Which? also assesses a more extensive list of 186 items, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their limited product range. For this longer list in September, Asda emerged as the most economical choice with an average bill of £465.66, beating Tesco with a Clubcard where the total came to £472.45.

Conversely, Waitrose was identified as the priciest option, with an average cost of £161.19 for the smaller shopping list and a staggering £531.39 for the larger list.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on the findings, noting Aldi’s consistent affordability and Asda’s competitiveness across a broader range of products. Sewraz advised consumers to explore different supermarket options to potentially save up to 36% on their grocery expenses amidst rising food prices and colder weather.
