Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has criticized demonstrators supporting Palestine as “un-British” following the recent attack on a synagogue in Manchester. She expressed disappointment in those who participated in the protests, labeling their actions as dishonorable. The attack resulted in the deaths of two individuals, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, with three others sustaining serious injuries.
Thousands of individuals gathered in various UK cities to protest after a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza was stopped, leading to the detention of those onboard, including activist Greta Thunberg. Mahmood emphasized her disapproval of the protests, describing the behavior as uncharacteristic of British values. She urged the protesters to show empathy and allow the affected community time to grieve.
The Metropolitan Police reported 40 arrests in connection with the protests, which saw clashes near Downing Street and calls for demonstrations in other locations across the country. The assailant, Jihad Al-Shamie, who targeted worshippers at the synagogue, was shot dead by the police.
Mahmood assured the Jewish community of adequate policing resources and collaboration with security organizations to ensure their safety. She encouraged normalcy and affirmed the community’s right to practice their faith without fear, vowing to prioritize their security needs.
