Keir Starmer commended the courage of emergency services and security personnel for averting a potentially more catastrophic incident following a terrorist attack at a synagogue in Manchester. In a statement from 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister extended condolences to the families of the victims and those affected by the “horrific event.” He assured the Jewish community of the nation’s support in the days ahead, emphasizing unity and solidarity.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the country, Starmer acknowledged the efforts of Greater Manchester police, first responders, and security experts for their valor in preventing a larger tragedy. Amid the crisis, the Prime Minister interrupted a meeting with European leaders in Denmark to convene an urgent Cobra meeting in London after two members of the Jewish community lost their lives in the synagogue attack.

During the meeting attended by key officials including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, Starmer highlighted the escalating trend of anti-Semitic sentiments, stressing the need to combat such hatred. He underscored the persistent security challenges faced by Jewish institutions in the UK and pledged enhanced protection measures to ensure the safety of the community.

Acknowledging the apprehension felt by Jewish individuals due to such incidents, the Prime Minister expressed solidarity and empathy, promising increased police presence for safeguarding the community. He reiterated the values of compassion and unity within Britain, assuring the Jewish population of their safety and belonging in the country.
