Joseph Kushner, a long-standing figure in St. Catharines, Ontario, has garnered various nicknames over his nearly 50-year tenure on the council. Referred to as “Doctor No,” “Professor Negative,” “Frosty the No-man,” and “No Joe Kushner,” he proudly defends his frugality with taxpayer money, likening his approach to spending as he would with his own funds.

At 85 years old, Kushner has decided to step down from his council position and retire from his role as an economics professor at Brock University to focus on caring for his wife, Yvette, and managing his health concerns following brain tumor surgery. His legacy of fiscal conservatism and community contributions, as highlighted by Councilor Matt Harris, will endure as he bows out of the political scene.

A newly released second edition biography titled “Canada’s Longest-Serving Councillor” commemorates Kushner’s unparalleled service, spanning seven mayoral administrations. Co-author Wesley Turner, a historian and former colleague of Kushner, noted the significance of documenting Kushner’s remarkable journey while he is still alive, emphasizing the historical value of his record-breaking tenure.

Despite a minor disagreement between the co-authors over the inclusion of photographs in the biography, a compromise was reached to feature illustrations in an appendix. Among the captivating images is a snapshot of a youthful Kushner serenading his German Shepherds with an accordion, showcasing his unique talents and interests beyond his public persona.

Beyond his political achievements, Kushner’s passion for animals, antique telephones, and Ukrainian cuisine sets him apart. Known for his involvement with “The Kushner Cat Corner” at the Humane Society of Greater Niagara and his affinity for Flemish giant rabbits, Kushner’s diverse interests and community endeavors illustrate a multifaceted personality that extends far beyond his public duties.

For those intrigued by Kushner’s life story, copies of the biography are available for purchase at the Humane Society of Greater Niagara, with proceeds benefiting the animal shelter. His rich history and enduring impact on St. Catharines stand as a testament to his unwavering dedication to public service and his compassionate spirit towards both humans and animals alike.
