Kingston’s Mayor Reacts to Trump’s Lake America Renaming

Kingston’s Mayor, Bryan Paterson, expressed amusement at President Donald Trump’s recent decision to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America. Paterson described the move as “silly” and “utterly ridiculous,” echoing the sentiments of many Canadians.

Prime Minister Mark Carney also weighed in, stating that the lake’s name, originating from the Wendat word Ontari’io meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,” has been in use for over 400 years. Carney emphasized that the historical significance of the name predates both the formation of Canada and the United States.

The Wendat Nation expressed outrage at the renaming, with Grand Chief Pierre Picard condemning the attempt to erase their history. Paterson emphasized the deep connection Kingston has with Lake Ontario, highlighting its importance to the city’s identity and dismissing the renaming as a mere “joke.”

Meanwhile, across the border in Rochester, New York, the city council reaffirmed its commitment to using the original name, Lake Ontario, in all official capacities. The council emphasized the cultural legacy of the Great Lake and rejected any attempt to erase centuries of Indigenous history.

In response to Trump’s actions, Paterson and other council members have chosen not to engage, viewing the move as unworthy of a response. The mayor underscored the community’s unity and resolve in the face of such “bluster and craziness,” emphasizing the enduring friendship between border communities.

Despite the provocative nature of Trump’s decision, Paterson made it clear that Kingston has no intention of changing the name of Lake Ontario Park or making any territorial claims. He emphasized the lasting relationships and values that will outlive transient political actions, expressing confidence in the enduring bond between Canada and the United States.
