Parents and educators in the heart of the Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo are calling for a postponement of school reopening due to the escalating infections that are surpassing containment efforts. The outbreak, focused in the eastern Ituri province, is the most rapidly expanding in Ebola’s history, with 5,713 confirmed cases and 2,744 deaths reported by Congolese health authorities. Concerns are raised as weekly cases and fatalities are on the rise in Ituri and Nord Kivu, indicating a potentially larger outbreak scale than reported figures suggest.

Kyeng Mercy, an epidemiologist from Africa CDC, estimates that only 30 to 40 percent of cases are being identified, pointing to significant underdetection within communities. This situation suggests the outbreak may be three times larger than officially recorded. Notably, children under four years old have the highest fatality rate at 60 percent, according to the World Health Organization.

Scheduled for September 1, the reopening of schools across Congo faces resistance in Ituri, where some teachers and parents advocate for a delay, citing the ongoing health risk posed by the Ebola outbreak. Fazila Rebecca, a teacher in Bunia, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety over resuming classes amid inadequate protective measures.

Local teachers in Ituri have urged authorities to evaluate the outbreak’s status before making decisions on school resumption. Training for teachers has been accelerated to ensure they are well-informed about the disease, with measures such as temperature checks and provision of sanitizing gel being implemented for student safety. The urgent need for additional funding to combat the outbreak was highlighted by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, underscoring the current funding shortfall in the response plan.

The Ebola outbreak in eastern D.R.C., exacerbated by insecurity, displacement, and a health worker strike, continues to spread uncontrollably. Efforts to contain the outbreak have been challenged by the lack of approved treatments for the Bundibugyo virus driving the epidemic. Clinical trials for potential vaccines and treatments are underway, including investigations into the effectiveness of the Ervebo vaccine.

While disruptions caused by containment measures have impacted daily life in affected provinces, efforts to enhance community trust and preparedness are deemed crucial by advocacy groups. As the community prioritizes the safety of children, the focus remains on equipping schools, teachers, and families with the necessary information and resources to ensure a safe return to school.
