A storm hit Prince Edward Island in the afternoon, bringing strong winds, hail, heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. The storm passed through Charlottetown around 1:40 p.m., causing power outages for numerous Maritime Electric customers, primarily in Charlottetown. Meteorologist Ryan Snodden from CBC described it as a tumultuous weather day in central and eastern parts of the province, with slow-moving thunderstorms resulting in intense rainfall, strong winds, and localized hail. Radar estimates indicated rainfall rates reaching nearly 50 mm/h.

There were indications of a likely tornado touching down near Souris in eastern P.E.I., as seen in a video submitted to CBC News where trees were seen being lifted into the air, and the tornado’s funnel became visible over the water. Brielle Campbell, residing in Little Harbour near Souris, reported witnessing what appeared to be a tornado while observing the storm from her home, describing spinning clouds and chaotic movement on the ground.

Residents in the affected areas, such as Blair Chapman, also experienced turbulent weather conditions, with shrubs flying and trees uprooted. The storm’s unpredictability was evident as heavy rain alternated with sunshine and sudden downpours. Localized flooding prompted warnings from Charlottetown police, leading to street closures in Sherwood and Parkdale due to flooding. Some businesses and facilities, like the sports center at UPEI, also closed as a precaution.

Images captured during the storm showed the impact of hail, rain, and wind on the province. Charlottetown’s residents were advised to be cautious while driving due to the flooding risk, and some streets and businesses were temporarily closed. A video of a dumpster floating on Exhibition Drive in Charlottetown during the storm highlighted the severity of the weather conditions.
